Working with children
Art therapy for children is child-led and often looks and feels like play.
Children are welcomed into a calm, creative space where they can choose how they want to explore. This might include drawing and painting, using clay, building and creating, or working with figures in the sand tray.
The sand tray offers a unique way for children to express themselves. Using sand and miniature objects, children can create scenes or worlds that reflect how things feel for them. There is no pressure to explain or talk about what they make - the play itself holds meaning.
Sessions follow the child’s lead. Some children enjoy moving between materials, others return to the same activity each week. The therapist supports this process by offering safety, curiosity, and attunement, allowing the child to express themselves in their own way and at their own pace.
Art therapy can help children process big feelings, changes, worries, or experiences that are hard to talk about. Through play, creativity, and a trusting relationship, children can feel understood, supported, and more confident in themselves.
